Drop Camps - Elk and Mule Deer

Drop camps are designed for hunters who like to do their own thing and take care of themselves. These are tent camps equipped with everything you need except your bedroll, food, and personal items. Each person will be limited to 75 lbs. of gear packed in duffle bags. Food should be packed in small coolers or cardboard boxes suitable to be loaded on a pack animal. Styrofoam containers are discouraged. We may repack items in order to balance the loads.

The canvas tents are waterproofed every year with Thompson sealer; tarps are kept in camp in case of unusually wet weather. Equipment includes propane cooking grills, heaters and gas lanterns. We also make available wood burning stoves for heat unless there is a "no burning" ban in the area. Cots with foam pads, grub boxes, table with chairs, an axe and shovel plus a covering for the sleeping tent floor are standard equipment.

Tents are 12' x 14' and can sleep 4 people. We set your camp up according to how it best suits your hunting party. We provide a separate cooking tent. We pack you and your supplies in the day before opening morning and help you become acquainted with the area you will be hunting. This is all done by horse and mule. Horses are not left in camp. You will be responsible to properly care for anything you kill. We will certainly share with you any information available as to where we think the elk and deer may be, particularly animals we have been spotting throughout the season. Our guides are more than happy to give any advice for your hunt.

Camps are checked every day, except opening morning unless requested. If you kill something before your departure date it will be quartered, packed out and hung at the base camp at Mill Creek (GMU 66), or the Little Big Horn Lodge at Cimarron (GMU 65). If there is danger of spoiling due to abnormally warm weather, we will refrigerate your meat either in Gunnison or at the Lodge - depending on where you are hunting with us. You will be expected to cover this expense if we take it to Gunnison. Plan on packing out the day after your fifth day of hunting. You will have the option of extending your hunting days during the long seasons. Our goal is for you to enjoy yourself and have a memorable and successful hunting trip with us.

Please note: All firearms should be sighted in before arriving at the  hunting area. Discharging of firearms in the vicinity will not be allowed prior to opening morning. Guns will be unloaded while traveling horseback. Licensed hunters will be expected to follow Colorado hunting rules and regulations.
